Stab Magazine‘s recently released labor of love A Stab in the Dark is all about the process in creating the most bad ass surf board possible. Along with Swell Magazine, the concept is showcased through a nearly 40-minute documentary, 13 of the world’s best shapers were commissioned to create their most pristine, high quality, high performance boards possible to be tested by one of the worlds most elite surfer, pro rider Dane Reynolds. The catch? Neither the shapers nor the surfer knew the others’ identity. No logos were allowed, no brand associations depicted and no preconceived notions or favortism: simply Reynolds in a room with a pile of the worlds most expertly-crafted surf boards sans names or insignia.
Faced with the best day job imaginable, Reynolds’s task was to ride the boards and give lucid, critical and analytical observations on each board over a 10-day period.
The Stab Magazine crew took to Johannesburg, South Africa back in June of this year along with Dane Reynolds and 13 anonymous boards. Faced with the best day job imaginable, Reynolds’s task was to ride the boards and give lucid, critical and analytical observations on each board over a 10-day period. We won’t spoil the outcome, but do know the team of shapers all killed it in creating smoothly curved virgin boards which Reynolds beautifully shreds on the beach off of South Africa’s largest city and capital. Don’t miss the exquisite ride scenes and dialogue showcased in A Stab in the Dark ready to be played in its entirety above.
